At twenty-one, Vivian West would be young for a starship captain anywhere but the Badlands, where their five-year tenure aboard the Vagabond is uncomfortably normal. Often they feel slightly uncomfortable in their own body, as if their blood is running wrong in their veins. They live on a constant knife-edge of waiting for the day when their body might decide to attack itself.

The last five years of West's life have been spent in various kinds of mourning for three people: their parents, and Lin Calla, their once-partner. All three still live, but West's circumstances make contact impossible.

When West isn't chasing ion storms around the badlands, tracking their movement to keep other ships safe, they enjoy knitting, listening to music, and analyzing Old Earth film and television. Their favorite show, unsurprisingly, is Raumpatriolle: Orion.

Jason Patric and Ray Liotia play the parts of two Detroit police offers tasked with bringing the killers of a fellow undercover officer to justice. Dark, gritty and overwhelming, Narc doesn’t sugarcoat law enforcement but somehow keeps the experience real without turning the opinion of the viewer against the officers, who often bend the rules as far as they can without going over the edge. Excellent drama, along with some very realistic dialog and some top-notch acting brings this title to the forefront of its niche. I guarantee you won’t figure out “who done it” until the very end. Definitely not a date night movie, or something to watch while the kids are around, but something perfect for a rainy afternoon flick with the guys.

I’ve been writing a fic for COD.

Ngl, I’m nervous to post it anywhere. I’m really excited about it so I at least want to post a basic summary. Its mostly about what Simon when he’s off duty and at home. I don’t write about any missions because they really don’t fit in with the rest of the story. The closest I get is where he’s leaving for them.

His love interest is a bartender. She’s lived a rough life too, but wasn’t as fortunate to have a family bond. She’s getting to know herself and dealing with her trauma. She’s a former sex worker who left an awful situation. She’s from the Nevada area.

I try to keep as close as I can to his OG backstory, but sprinkled in some good memories that he shares with her. I also try to keep him as Simon. She gets to know Simon, and he’s maskless while off duty.

“I can’t” you said, feeling your heartbeat going wild and a transpiration starting. You know you have to take the shots since it’s mandatory for the trip you’re going on, but you hate needles. For real.

“You can’t what?” your friend asks. The trip to Crooked Island is your sister’s bachelorette celebration and you tried greatly to prepare yourself for the visit to the clinic center, talking extensively with your therapist about it and feeling really bold and ready. Now, however, you feel like you don’t really need to go.

“Take the shot. I can’t take the shot.” you repeat all over, not really listening to your best friend’s reasoning and getting to the corridor of the waiting room. She holds you back, impeding you from leaving.

“Your sister is next in the line, what if you go with her to see how it goes and how quick is all over? Then maybe you’ll grow the courage to do it too?

“I can’t go. She’s a big girl, she’ll be fine without me.”

“Sorry, miss? I think she’s having a panic attack.” You hear a deep voice saying from behind you and suddenly you’re being hug by someone twice your size. “You’re safe. Take deep breaths, sweetheart; zero in on the sound of my voice, ok?”

You have no idea who he is or why he’s helping, but his arms felt so big and hard it’s impossible not to feel secure.

“What’s your name?” He asks softly. You answer, not trusting your voice too much. Before you can ask his name, he keeps on with the questions. Starting from your age he goes all the way through your life, making you feel calmer, ending with “and what’s your phone number?” - that made you laugh and lean out of his embrace. The beauty in his face struck you. The hug was enough to show he was strong, and you always loved strong guys, but you didn’t expect to add that handsome face to the package.

“Thank you for the help. Are you here to take shots, too?” you ask the large man and he smiles, suddenly a bit shy because of your obvious change of subject.

“Yes. I’ve just left the army and my parents gifted me a trip to The Bahamas. I guess they’re tired of me trying to fix everything in their house.”

“Army?” Yeah, you can imagine him in uniform. Hot. Can’t really visualize him without the beard though.

“Cpt. Syverson.” he held his hand out for you to shake. “When is your flight?” He asks not letting go of your hand.

“In 12 days. And yours?” you look from your hands to his face.

“Same. Are you...do you have a boyfriend going with you?”

“No. No boyfriend” the smiles and stares between you having a parallel conversation. A ‘is this a lucky wave coming my way?’ kind of talk.

“Would you maybe join me for a drink at the beach?”

Your friends call your name, it’s your time to take the yellow fever monster shot.

“Why? Aren’t you free sooner?”

He laughs, reaches inside his pockets, and gives you his phone. “Put on your phone number, punk.”

“Only if you let me hold your hand while that evil woman pierces me” you say with a cute smile.

“You owe me dinner at least” he replies walking with you, a reassuring hand in your lower back.

Hello,

Study it if you can! But even then, teachers will not be able to cover everything, either because they focus on something else or think it's irrelevant, so you'll have to take care of those extra parts yourself, during your free time.

Imagine you love working out and want to become a trainer.

You'll need first aid certifications and to follow a CPT program. You'll learn how to build training routines depending on the client's goal, perform assessments, communicate professionally, keep people safe, do paperwork, etc.

Technically, once that's done, you can work. But it doesn't mean you're ready.

Because you need to learn about nutrition, deficiencies, chronic illnesses, eating disorders, allergies. You need to be charismatic, sweet, and make people at ease when they come for the first time, especially if they're introverts and ready to run. You need to work on your prejudice so that you can treat everybody the same way: no flirting with the girls, no mocking/judging the fat, no infantilizing the disabled. You need to learn how to play along and stay diplomatic even when you don't like someone. You need to work on your empathy so that if someone expresses vulnerability, you won't make fun of them or underestimate their pain. You need to be the person people feel they can trust from the moment they meet them.

If you work with customers, the job is like 70% connecting. If a guy's workout is crap, he's bummed out, admits his mother is dying, and your reaction is to tell him to man up, it doesn't matter if you're the best trainer in the world from a technical point of view, you're a piece of crap and he won't be back. Because your job is to make his experience as positive as possible and you failed.

I have a dyslexic student. I realised it immediately, because I knew about it a little, and spent a few days researching the condition, symptoms, and teachers' tips to make things as smooth as possible during lessons. If I had decided to not care about it and continued organizing my sessions the usual way, that would have made me a bad teacher, regardless of my knowledge.

The human part isn't taught at school. Yet, it's capital. If I am at a 5-star restaurant and the waiter acts like a punk bitch, I will leave and never come back, even if I loved the food. If I leave a job without having another lined up, I didn't quit the job, I quit the management. If people disappoint you, it doesn't matter how good their product is or how long you've been around, it won't be enough to keep you.

So, identify every aspect of the job and make sure you become good at all of them, get in touch with professionals, read the books the famous ones wrote, check their online reviews and see how they can inspire you, etc.

3. Favorite band you started listening to this year.

I need you to know this question shut my brain down for a solid hour. Bc there were so many. It was the year of learning the name for my favorite type of music. “Pop-punk”. Turns out there’s an active thriving scene of bands carrying on where my 90s favorites left off. Who the fuck knew. I DO NOW AND I LOVE IT ALL.

If I had to pick one (1)... which is excruciating...

I guess Waterparks- because I think technically Our Last Night and Stand Atlantic I got into in 2018 when I saw them open for New Found Glory. That’s over a year ago. Neck deep is also incredible and life changing recovery music.

Gotta shout out “Meet Me At The Altar” and “KennyHoopla”- new artists of color in the scene and they fucking rock.

6. Episode of TV that defined the year for you

Haunting of Hill House finale - specifically the addict Luke literally facing down his deamon. Rae got me into horror this year which speaks to her power as a guide and to how much I have grown since I was a kid. I’m not scared of stupid shit anymore Bc I’ve seen real horror which is human cruelty and suffering. This show absolutely nails dysfunctional family dynamics-and watching this man get through the worst night of his life one breath at a time - without any crutches- no drugs, no help- white-knuckling that shit- one second at a time and he fucking made it. He got through it. And like 2020 sometimes all we can do is stare the devil in the face and refuse to back down. There is no heroism greater than that. “Sometimes the fear won’t go away, and you’ve gotta do it scared.” And Yaknow what motivated Luke? Another addict who had helped him get clean had fallen off the wagon and needed help. Love makes us brave.

The day before, I’d gotten really upset bc my partner suggested a podcast on mental health that didn’t fit for me. I’d lamented that “I know I’m fucked up! I know what the damage is. What I need is to know how to rewire my brain. I don’t need talk therapy to review the trauma. The meds help but only so much. Most of my healing has been listening to other ppl recovering from CPTSD. I want to keep moving forward and just haven’t found techniques that work.

Then I’m in the car and this podcast comes on.

(It felt like the universe answering my question.)

Its a millennial female like me- who records her CPT therapy sessions.

Cognitive Processing Therapy (I learned) is a new, accelerated form of guided Cognitive Behavioral Therapy where your guide helps you identify “stuck points”- beliefs you hold that are painful that you can’t get past. They teach you to assess your stuck points, re-evaluate them and maybe realize they aren’t true.

I cried when this girl realized that she thought her rape was her fault. She was 12. She waved back to a nice man in an alley her mom told her not to cut through. She’d been wearing men’s boxer shorts from the gap. She believed it was the stretchiness of the ((non-sexy)) shorts that made it easy for him to pull them down and kiss her without her consent. She also believed she “shouldn’t be traumatized bc her assault wasn’t as bad as it could have been.”

The power of watching someone realize that their trauma wasn’t their fault, and their feelings are valid was incredible.

And I was also so greatful that someone was open and honest and vulnerable about her mental health struggles. Her honesty gave me the tool I’d been searching for. I’ve used the technique on several stuck points with my partner as my guide since he knows my story- and I feel like I “resolved” some of the tangles that had been open and raw for over 5 years. It’s incredible.

We are on this earth to heal eachother. 🖤
